Danilo M. Baylen awarded the James G. Sucy Distinguished Service Award

INTERNATIONAL VISUAL LITERACY ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES JAMES G. SUCY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD WINNER

Leuven, Belgium – Danilo M. Baylen, Ed.D, MLIS, and Professor at West Georgia University, was awarded the International Visual Literary Association’s (IVLA) James G. Sucy Distinguished Service Award at the 51st annual conference held in Leuven, Belgium this past October.

The James G. Sucy Distinguished Service Award is given only when merited to IVLA members who have substantially contributed to the organization and furthered the ideals of visual literacy far above traditional expectations of membership, committee work, or publication functions. It implies work quality and personal commitment that merit very special recognition beyond the Association’s usual appreciation. Baylen has been an active member of IVLA for over a decade. He has acted as a member and a chair of numerous committees, including the Executive Committee, since joining the organization in 2009. Baylen has also directed the IVLA Board for two terms, participated in conference planning, and is currently the Editor for The Book of Selected Readings.

Cristine G. Goldberg, Ed.D., Baylen’s nominator and National Board Certified Teacher, wrote “As a colleague, what has always been one of my personal favorite characteristics of Dr. Baylen is his willingness to help new faculty come into the fold and become aware of how important visual literacy is for our students and, subsequently, their students. ”

Baylen is only one of fifteen scholars to win the James G. Sucy Distinguished Service Award since 1994. He is also a past winner of the Education (2015) and Research (2018) Awards. Winners are selected by an awards committee comprised of IVLA members.  Nominations for the 2020 awards will be announced shortly. For any questions in the meantime, contact Dr. Kazuyo Kubo, Awards Committee Chair, at kkubo@lesley.edu.
