Scholarships

The IVLA offers four scholarships:
one for artists, one for students, one for members, and one for leadership
hoping to attend the conference.

Deborah Curtiss
Artist Scholarship

Image of Dr. Rhonda RobinsonDeborah Curtiss is a life-long visual artist, IVLA member, leader, and contributor. Deborah began to paint during her first year at Yale University School of Art to which she transferred after three years of liberal arts at Antioch College. Amazed by the intellectual challenge that accompanies sensual enthrallment with emerging colors and forms in painting, she exhibited regularly in Philadelphia and the vicinity from 1965 to 2017; and educated others in visual art through teaching, 1972–1998: drawing, painting, and/or visual literacy work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Drexel and Temple Universities, and the University of the Arts (including graduate seminars). Deborah has published two visual art books, and more than 300 articles, and reviews. She has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Visual Literacy intermittently since 1998. Curtiss is now retired and in 2017, she donated her visual literacy library to the Benedict Library of Visual Literacy at Arizona State University in Tempe.

The IVLA will award Deborah Curtiss Artist Scholarships to enable artists who lack financial support to have an opportunity to attend the conference. The IVLA will select applicants who are practicing artists in need. The award amount is $750 and registration for the conference will be waived.

Dr. Rhonda Robinson
Student Scholarship

Dr. Rhonda S Robinson,  Distinguished Teaching Professor, emeritus, Educational Technology, Research, and Assessment, Northern Illinois University, is a long-time IVLA member and contributor. Rhonda worked with educational technology and assessment as well as teacher training for technology.  She has spent her career working around ideas of visual learning and literacy. Originally an English teacher in middle school, Rhonda was very interested in media literacy and language arts and began to pursue media production in her master’s and doctorate degrees. Beginning with ‘old media,’ Rhonda’s techniques now span into the digital realm, encouraging students to analyze imagery from newspapers and video, tapping into kids’ (and their teachers’) natural creative abilities.

As an IVLA Board member, Rhonda helped plan and organize conferences in San Francisco and Chicago and has most recently been involved with several smaller museums in Chicago, where she helped CPS teachers integrate visual literacy activities and CCSS into their existing practices. Rhonda also recorded an NIU STEAM Podcast along with illustrator Tom Lichtenheld, discussing the importance of visuals for learning. Her active membership and involvement in IVLA for over 30 years has given our members so many irreplaceable opportunities for learning, for professional development, for exciting travel to international locales, for collaborative projects, as well as her friendship.

The IVLA will award Dr. Rhonda Robinson Student Scholarships to enable students who lack financial support to have an opportunity to attend the conference. The IVLA will select applicants who are enrolled at a community college, college, or university. The award amount is $750 and registration for the conference will be waived.
