INTERNATIONAL VISUAL LITERACY ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES EMERGING RESEARCHER AWARD WINNER
Urbana-Champaign, Illinois – Lisa Winstanley, Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technology University in Singapore, was awarded the International Visual Literacy Association’s (IVLA) Emerging Research Award at the 55th annual conference held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this October.
The Emerging Researcher Award is given to members of the Association who are actively involved in research in visual literacy that furthers the cause of the field, who are building a record of scholarly publication, and who are working toward advancing knowledge within the field. Assistant Professor Lisa Winstanley’s research in addressing visual plagiarism has had a significant impact on the field of design and visual communication, particularly in the context of visual literacy. Her work has not only brought attention to the critical issue of visual plagiarism but has also offered innovative and ethical solutions to enhance visual literacy to combat this problem. Her investigations into the intricacies of visual plagiarism have highlighted the complex relationships between visual content, originality, and the moral and ethical considerations of producing and consuming images in contemporary creative practice. By delving into the ethical dimensions of this issue, she has provided a nuanced perspective that fosters a deeper understanding of visual literacy within the design community.
Joan Marie Kelly, Winstanley’s nominator, artist, and lecturer at the Nanyang Technology University School of Art and Design says that Winstanley’s work, “exemplifies the highest standards of scholarship and ethical practice while promoting visual literacy as an essential component of design and visual communication”.
Winstanley is the second winner of this award since its inception in 2022. Winners are selected by an awards committee comprised of IVLA members. For any questions in the meantime, contact Dr. Kazuyo Kubo, Awards Committee Chair, at kkubo@lesley.edu.
