INTERNATIONAL VISUAL LITERACY ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES EDUCATION AWARD WINNER
Virtual Conference 2020 –Domenic Screnci, Former Senior Advisor for Digital Learning and Innovation and the Former Executive Director for Educational Technology, Training, and Outreach in Information Services and Technology at Boston University, was awarded the International Visual Literacy Association’s (IVLA) Education Award at the 49th annual conference held virtually this past September.
The Education Award is given only when merited to IVLA members in recognition of significant personal contribution to visual literacy through exemplary teaching, educational outreach, and/or the development of model curricula and other educational materials.
Domenic Screnci is receiving this award for his consistent promotion of visual literacy and participation in visual literacy instruction throughout his career. Since his dissertation in education (1985-1992) that partly focused on the application of information mapping for teaching in remote classrooms, Screnci has been pursuing ways to inform others about the importance of visual literacy in higher education. Some of those ways include, teaching a graduate-level course on information design and visual literacy for master’s level students at the University of Massachusetts from 2001-2015, and how he currently lectures about visual literacy in the Boston University’s online Masters Health Communication program. Screnci is the founder of Boston University’s Online Health Communication program and he promoted and assisted in the creation of the certificate program in Visual and Digital Health Communication as well as, the course, METHC762 Visual Communication in the Digital Health
Screnci is only one of nine scholars to win the Education Award since 1994. Winners are selected by an awards committee comprised of IVLA members. Nominations for the 2021 awards will be announced shortly. For any questions in the meantime, contact Dr. Kazuyo Kubo, Awards Committee Chair, at kkubo@lesley.edu.
