Artist Scholarships 2022

Deborah Pratt Curtiss Artist Scholarship

Deborah Curtiss is a life-long visual artist, IVLA member since 1987, leader, and contributor. Deborah began to paint during her first year at Yale University School of Art to which she transferred after three years of liberal arts at Antioch College. Amazed by the intellectual challenge that accompanies sensual enthrallment with emerging colors and forms in painting, she exhibited regularly in Philadelphia and the vicinity from 1965 to 2017; and educated others in visual art through teaching, 1972–1998: drawing, painting, and/or visual literacy work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Drexel and Temple Universities, and the University of the Arts (including graduate seminars). Deborah has published two visual art books, and more than 300 articles, and reviews. She has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Visual Literacy intermittently since 1998. Curtiss is now retired and in 2017, she donated her visual literacy library to the Benedict Library of Visual Literacy at Arizona State University in Tempe.

The IVLA will award several IVLA artist scholarships in 2022 to enable artists who lack financial support to have an opportunity to attend the conference and participate in the exhibit. The IVLA will select applicants who are practicing artists in need. Individual scholarships will include IVLA membership for two years. Please note that at least one of the awards is reserved for a minority artist and at least one of the awards is reserved for an artist outside of the United States.
