Associate Professor of Sociology and Children, Youth, and Family Study, Lesley University / Sociology

My work examines the experiences of immigrant families, which involves investigating how educational space is designed to encourage inclusive learning. I was one of the Davis Grant Fellows at Lesley University. The fellows worked collaboratively on a visual literacy pedagogical project. I am currently working on developing a course on visual sociology. Visual literacy provides a possibility for an expanded analysis of the social world with its examination of what is seen, visually illustrated, photographed, and videotaped rather than more traditional depictions represented by text and numbers. To me, social observation of visual material uncovers social realities that are not necessarily captured by conventional empirical research.
