INTERNATIONAL VISUAL LITERACY ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD WINNER

Jyväskylä, Finland Juliana Ferreira de Oliveria, undergraduate graphic design student at Federal University of Paraná, was awarded the International Visual Literacy Association’s (IVLA) Student Research Award  at the 54st annual conference held in Jyväskylä, Finland this past August. 

This award is given for outstanding student research that furthers the cause of visual literacy. Juliana Ferreira de Oliveria was nominated for part of their undergraduate thesis work titled, “Visual Learning and Multiple Temporalities,” which was presented at the 54th annual IVLA conference and included in the 2021 Book of Selected Readings. This research presents the development of a didactic visual tool for graphic explication of historical time and space in the context of high school in Brazil. By working with a temporal approach of synchronism articulated with diachronism and spatiality, the proposed tool aims to stimulate the teaching/learning of historical events, providing a critical discussion between the parties involved (student and teacher). The tool also encourages teacher protagonism, as the teacher stimulates, by making use of visual language in articulating time and space, the visual learning of students, working with multiple languages ​​and, in this way, approaching information literacy.
